Laminate flooring is the quick, fuss-free answer to wood flooring on a budget, while still getting a beautiful floor for your home. Although much maligned in the 80’s and 90’s, laminates have come a long way since the Duran Duran were bopping about the place. A big reason for this is the advance in technologies that have occurred since, which has allowed the production of higher quality laminate flooring. These new laminates are often indistinguishable from solid or engineered flooring to the untrained eye, and many are designed to replicate the look of highly treated, coloured boards, at a fraction of the cost.
Lmainate flooring is essentially an image of wood printed on HDF boards and treated with varying amounts of very hard-wearing minerals. These HDF boards are formed under high pressure which makes them very strong, and the mineral coating protects the board from scratches and fading etc. Some deluxe laminates are even embossed with an infinite pattern which mimics the feel of wood grain underfoot. Other laminates even have proprietary coatings which can protect the boards from water damage, UV fading etc. These factors combined make laminate flooring a practical and affordable choice to give the look of real wood, at a fraction of the cost.
When choosing a laminate, consider what the room is going to be used for. If you are choosing flooring for a hallway or a kitchen, you should choose a laminate with the highest AC rating you can, as this will provide the best guarantee against wear. If the laminate is going into a bathroom or a utility, look for a waterproof coating such as “Aquastop”, which will minimise water damage to boards in case of spillage. Board thickness can play a part in durability too, in general, the thicker the board (up to about 14mm), the sturdier the laminate. (This depends heavily on you subfloor!)
